Caroline dropped the last file in regards to the pro-bono case she just wrapped into the "closed" bin sitting on the side of her desk, and then leaned back in her chair with a sigh. This case had been somewhat refreshing. She hadn't worked a child's advocate case since she had left Los Angeles, and while she loved her work, and she loved getting paid for it, she was sick of the clients who felt like they could buy their way out of anything. That, and working for only them had made that spot of tarnish on her soul get a little bit bigger with every one. Working a case like the one she had just finished was something that made that spot shrink back down to size a bit, and while only the people who had to know knew about what she had just spent weeks doing, it made her feel better nonetheless.

Especially when she had won.

She left the door to her office open, before turning back to her computer with a sigh, flipping through her e-mail and checking her appointment book to verify that her evening was clear. She was looking forward to relaxing, but she wasn't going to reject company if it came her way.

OOC: If you'd rather do this on AIM, it's fine with me. Just poke me on her SN.

I had planned on going to the CP&S Halloween party last night. I did. Really. I had the costume, I had the make-up, I was going to make fun of the intern -- it was going to be great. Aside from the fact that I woke up that morning puking my guts out, and haven't quite stopped yet.

*sigh*

Well, whatever I missed, I hope you guys had a good time.

Halloween was probably one of Cora's least favorite times of the year. It wasn't the holiday itself so much as the expectations that were placed on the holiday. She didn't like the fact that most often the parties held on that night were going to be costume parties -- mostly because she tended to suck at picking out costumes. She figured she could always go with the classics -- but the sexy nurse outfit in her closet was getting old and this year she wanted to do something different.

As she stared down at the invitation for the annual Crane, Poole, and Schmidt Halloween bash and sighed heavily, before tapping the invitation against the table. There had to be someone who could help her get a great costume that wouldn't make her look like an idiot if she tried to wear it. She bit her lip, thinking, before reaching over and picking up her desk phone, dialing the number she only thought she'd have to use for things court related.

"Riley Toth."

"Riley, it's Caroline Parker."

There was a long pause on the other end of the line before he sighed. "What can I do for you?"

"I need your help."

"Something court related?"

"Not exactly."

Another long pause. "What do you need, Cora?"

"I need you to help me pick a Halloween costume," she said slowly, biting her lip uncomfortably.

"Do you really need my help for that?"

"C'mon, Riley -- you know I suck at this," she sighed, starting to sound desperate. "I really want to have a good costume this year."

He sighed heavily, before responding. "Meet me outside the courthouse after shift."

"You are a saint."

"Tell me about it. You seriously owe me one, Cora."

"Oh, believe me. I know."

I had drinks with Denny last night. He asked me to marry him. I had to let him down gently. It's not him, really--if I was the marrying type Denny would probably be first on my list--but I'm not therefore, he's not. I did tell him I'd keep him in mind if that ever changed though. Not that I think it ever will, really.

I have a case.

A juicy case. A really juicy case. I'm working with a woman I've never met before (Eva Cohen) but I've heard good things, so I can't wait to see how this pans out. I've also been given the intern.

I'm far too excited for this.

Caroline smiled at the message Denny left on her machine as she shifted through her mail. She'd have to try and catch up with him later--it was good to stay on the senior partner's good side.

The wedding had been--interesting. She knew that there were some situations that could have run better for Carrie than they had, but over all the wedding was beautiful, and Carrie and her new husband are safely stowed away on their honeymoon.

Now she was set on answering her mail and seeing how things stood with her cases. She was a little more relaxed and a little more tan, but now she was ready to get back in the game.

On Caroline's fancy wooden desk, is a post office bin, with a note taped to it that reads Mail goes in the bin, Jerry, meant for the mail boy who has a habit of leaving it wherever he pleases when she's not around. The office is completely empty and void of any personal/expensive property, since she's going to be gone for so long. Anyone who call her hears:

"You've reached Caroline Parker. I'm in the Bahamas. I will be there for another week. If it is an absolute, complete, and total emergency, you should have my cell phone number for that possibility and be able to reach me. Other wise, tough luck. I'll be back on the twentieth if you want to try me then."

Caroline was hard at work at her desk when her cell phone started ringing. She took one glance at the caller ID before rolling her eyes and picking it up. "Carrie, if this is another wedding 'emergency,' I'm gonna be really pissed off."

"Oh, that's cute, Cora. Real cute. I call you because I'm scared shitless, and you start cracking jokes." The other woman sounded angry--almost terrified. Caroline frowned slightly.

"What's going on?"

"Haven't you seen the news?"

"No, I've been in my office all day," Caroline frowned, catching Novak's new intern as he rushed past her office. "Hold on a sec."

"Hold on?" Carrie screeched at her as she put the phone down, and moved towards her office door. She poked her head out and caught the back end of his shirt.

"Hey, intern," she sighed as he turned around to face her, "What the hell is going on?"

"There was a bomb--" he began, and Cora blinked for a moment, flustered.

"A bomb, where?"

"DA's office," he replied, "Homicide Division."

Caroline stared at him for a second before looking back at her desk, "Fuck."

He laughed slightly before nodding, "Yeah--pretty much."

"Excuse me," she sighed, pointing back to the phone sitting on her desk, "I have to--"

"Yeah, yeah," he nodded, "Go right ahead."

She headed back to her desk, picking up her phone, "I'm so fuckin' sorry."

"So am I," Carrie sighed tiredly, "I thought you knew. But you're OK?"

"Yeah, I'm fine," she nodded, "I haven't been anywhere near the DA's office today."

"Know anyone who might have been?" Carrie asked, and Caroline hesitated for a minute, running through the list of possible people in her head before shaking her head.

"No--not really."

"I was surprised I got to you first," Carrie sighed, "I thought one of the parents would have called you."

"Yeah, me too," Caroline sighed, "Look, I've got some calls to make. We'll have dinner later?"

"Give me a call," Carrie sighed before she hung up. It was a few minutes before Caroline picked up the phone again, and dialed her mother's number, waiting for the answering machine to pick up.

"Hi, Mom. It's--me. I'm fine, just in case you were wondering."
